The show was originally slated to air on NBC in 2018, but a switch to HBO was confirmed in May of this year. The first episode of the show aired on that date in 2022. The second season of the show was announced in February 2022.

Episodes

1. In 1882, George Russell, his wife Bertha, and their two children, Larry and Gladys, traveled to New York City to live in a home constructed by Stanford White. As Marian's aunts prepare to welcome her to Doylestown after discovering she'll only get $30 from her late father's inheritance, sisters Agnes van Rhijn and Ada Brook are also preparing for Marian's arrival. When Marian's pocketbook and train ticket are stolen, Peggy Scott, a former student of the Institute for Colored Youth, offers her aid. Because of Marian's kindness, her aunts agree to let Peggy remain with them while the weather is uncooperative. Peggy agrees to meet with her mother, Dorothy, who demands she reunite with her estranged father, and Agnes gives her a job on the condition she tells her parents about the situation. After returning to New York, Agnes's son Oscar and George's son Larry meet at a party held by socialite Mamie Fish. In an attempt to break into the upper echelons of society, Marian attends a fancy party hosted by Bertha. Bertha pledges vengeance, but no one of significance shows up.

2. Marian's lawyer from Doylestown, Tom Raikes, has relocated to New York City. He starts a new job and tells Marian that he likes her romantically. While Peggy has sent out query letters to various publishers, she has not yet received any responses. Marian is shocked when Peggy confides in Tom about a legal situation she's discussing with him. During this time, Bertha offers her ballroom as a site for Mrs. Morris and Mrs. Fane's impending charity fair in an attempt to get involved. Instead, Bertha is ignored and the celebration is conducted in a pricey hotel. Angry, she and George head to the market, where he buys everything, ultimately closing it down. While George and Alderman Patrick Morris are working together on the business side of things, George devises a scheme in which the aldermen will buy George's company stock on margin, pass legislation permitting George to construct a new train station in town, and everyone will profit handsomely as a result.

3. George discovers that the bill will not be passed and that the aldermen are manipulating the stock to their own benefit. Legislators promise to distribute shares at a lower price if the price of the stock drops, which they believe will happen. Because of George's revenge-buying spree, the aldermen are obliged to pay a higher price for their shares, which drives them into poverty. An opportunity to get an article published by The Christian Advocate is presented to Peggy. However, she is confronted with severe discriminatory requirements. Thus, she refuses to be published. To John Adams' dismay, Oscar has plans to pursue a relationship with Gladys Russell. When Cornelius Eckhard, a guy who proposed to Ada and was sent away by Ada's father, approaches her, she is surprised and intrigued. The sole reason Eckhard wanted to marry Ada was to have a "meal ticket," and Agnes tells him as much to Eckhard. When he discovers that Ada does not have any money of her own, he abandons her. Marian accepts Tom's proposal of marriage. She doesn't give him a clear response since she knows Agnes would be against the match. Despite the pleas of the alderman, George continues to artificially inflate the stock price of his firm. Alderman Morris commits suicide because he is on the verge of losing everything.

4. On the condition that Aurora helps introduce Bertha into the old financial circles, George agrees to assist the Fanes in recovering any money lost in the stock catastrophe. After reading some of Peggy's work, T. Thomas Fortune, the editor of the New York Globe, employs her to write a piece on political connections. The Russell residence is shown to Bannister by Gladys when Ada's dog escapes during his stroll and is found by her. A widow, tainted by reports that her late husband's mistress was Sylvia Chamberlain, tries to get to know Marian. No love affair is formed between Bertha and George by their lady's maid, Turner. Her mother, Bridget, explains that Mrs. Bauer did not intervene to stop her from being molested when she was a youngster. On a trip to Brooklyn, Peggy and her father get into an argument, then Marian shows up abruptly with a suitcase full of worn shoes and offends the Scott family. Marian encounters Tom while attending a Red Cross benefit performance with Bertha and the Fanes. Before she accepts his marriage proposal, she wants him to win over her aunts.

5. Persuades Bertha to bring Archie Baldwin, Gladys's newest admirer, over for a meal. Marian's preconceptions about Peggy's family have not been forgiven by Peggy. In a cramped tenement flat, Mrs. Armstrong cares for her elderly mother. Ward McAllister is Bertha's go-to guy when it comes to socializing. At the opening of a Red Cross branch in Dansville, Miss Barton will speak. Aurora, Bertha, Marian, and Tom journey there. At Agnes's request, Peggy joins them on their journey to write an article and to keep an eye on Marian. In her book, Miss Barton admits that rich individuals utilize charitable giving to elevate their social status. Peggy interrupts Tom and Marian's passionate embrace. Peggy confides in Marian in private that she was once in love, but her father forbade it. Peggy accepts Marian's apologies for assuming she was in need of assistance. In an effort to marry Gladys, Oscar enlists the services of Miss Turner as a spy. If Archie doesn't accept George's job offer and quit stalking Gladys, he will never be able to work in finance again. Archie hastily departs, visibly scared. At this point, the number of people killed in the derailment is unknown, but Richard Clay has arrived to notify George. George and Bertha are getting ready to deal with the emergency.

6. George sets out to find the source of the train crash, finally discovering that someone within his organization had passed off defective axles as new ones. Anne Morris is outraged when Bertha gets elected to the Red Cross board of directors. In the wake of her conversation with Clara Barton, Peggy learns that the Globe's subscriber base has grown. Carrie Astor and Gladys Astor become friends during a Mamie Fish party, where Carrie offers advice on Gladys' coming-out celebration. Marian is torn between keeping Larry's job chances as an architect secret and getting Mrs. Chamberlain to donate money to the Red Cross, proving the allegations against her and her husband are true. Much to the chagrin of the Russell family butler, Church, Bertha hires van Rhijn butler Bannister to prepare an English-style luncheon for Ward McAllister, much to the chagrin of the Russell family butler, Church. When Agnes receives a message from an anonymous source, she learns the truth about Bannister's excuse for not doing his job. When confronted by the other attendees, she exits the luncheon. Armstrong overhears Oscar and Turner discussing business outside the Russell residence and immediately informs Agnes. There is a railroad employee who claims George told him to use the subpar axles, and Bertha finds out.

7. An all-electric railway station is on the drawing board, says George. Larry begs George to allow him to pursue a degree in architecture, which George first declines to do, but may do in the future. In order to plan Gladys's debutante ball, Bertha has picked a date. A manslaughter accusation might be brought against George. In order to keep Oscar's identity secret from Bertha, Agnes asks Marian to deliver a message to her. Bertha promptly dismisses Turner after spotting her making out with Larry. Agnes refuses to accept Tom as a spouse, despite Marian's best efforts. A power distribution ceremony to be held by Thomas Edison, who will turn on his Pearl Street producing plant, is being prepared by the city. Bertha decides to leave Marian behind when she invites Tom and Cissie Bingham to her party instead (rumored mistress of Henry Flagler). Peggy and Fortune attend the event together. The audience gasps in awe as Edison switches on his electric lights.

8. Meanwhile, Bertha is busy organizing a party to celebrate Gladys' coming out. As a prank, John Adams thwarts Oscar's courting of Gladys in Newport with the Russell family. Marian accepts Tom's marriage proposal and intends to elope, despite Aurora's reservations. After introducing himself as Collyer to Flora McNeil, George's valet swiftly departs. By intercepting Tom's letter to Peggy, Miss Armstrong makes Peggy admit to her father and the van Rhijn-Brook family that she had a stillborn son and an annulled marriage. Peggy is forced to quit after Agnes refuses to fire Armstrong. All of Jack's family relatives are either deceased or estranged, and he tells Bridget about it. George Russell learns via Marian that his stenographer, Miss Ainsley, and George Dixon, falsely accused him of incompetence, resulting in the accusations against him being dropped. Astor returns early, and McAllister rushes Bertha out of the Astor's Newport mansion before she has a chance to tour the house, resulting in humiliation for Bertha.

9. There was no response when Bertha called Mrs. Astor to invite Carrie to Gladys's debutante ball, so she uninvited her. Carrie, enraged, turns her back on her mother. Marian prepares to elope with Tom. Peggy and Sylvia assist Marian as she prepares to elope with him. Josh Borden, a French-trained chef from Wichita, Kansas, admits to George that he is actually Monsieur Baudin. Bertha dismisses George, despite his objections. In the days leading up to their elopement, Tom humiliates Marian in front of their guests and declares his intention to marry into a wealthy family. Peggy discovers that her son has been adopted and that he is still alive. They set off for Philadelphia to find the boy, and she's joined by her mother. Every trick in the book is used by George and Bertha to entice the old-money set to their gala. By attending the gala and inviting as many of her friends as possible, Mrs. Astor makes peace with Bertha and her family. When Borden's substitute becomes intoxicated, the party is nearly disrupted, but Borden returns at the last minute and is rehired by George. Ada cheers Marian up by telling her that the ball will be a success and that things will be better.
