Michael Bay directed and produced Ambulance, a 2022 American action thriller film set in the year 2022. Based on Laurits Munch-Petersen and Lars Andreas Pedersen's 2005 Danish film of the same name, this is a New Republic Pictures/Endeavor Content/Project X Entertainment/Bay Films co-production. There are two adoptive siblings who become bank robbers and kidnap an ambulance with a paramedic and a police officer inside who are in serious condition. Jake Gyllenhaal, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, and Eiza Gonzalez also feature.
It was initially revealed that Phillip Noyce will be directing the project back in August of 2015. Navot Papushado and Aharon Keshales succeeded him in 2017, but both were ousted by Bay in 2020. De Angelis, the cinematographer, began shooting in Los Angeles in January 2021 and finished the project by mid-March. Lorne Balfe wrote the film's score in the post-production phase. Universal Pictures has set a release date of April 8, 2022 for the picture in the United States.
Story
After a protracted search for the $231,000 he needs to pay for his wife Amy's operation, war veteran Will Sharp turns to Danny, his adopted brother and a career criminal, who convinces him to join in on a $32 million bank robbery. An officer is kidnapped and inadvertently shot by Will as he travels to the bank for a date.
All but Will and Danny are killed by the LAPD SIS (Special Investigation Section) division when they arrive. The brothers kidnap an ambulance that has EMT Cam Thompson, who is treating Zach, who is critically injured, on board, and take him hostage. During a halt, Cam tries to flee, but decides to stay as Zach goes into a coma.
SIS Captain Monroe dispatches helicopters to pursue the ambulance. Cam enlists the aid of Danny and Will to utilize a defibrillator and give Zach some of their blood. For assistance evading the authorities, Danny turns to the gangster buddy of his father's, Papi. Danny threatens to toss Cam off the ambulance when she prevents him from shooting Zach's buddy, Mark, who has been following them.
Anson Clark, a former acquaintance of Danny's, is assigned to the investigation as an FBI agent. Cam, with Will's help, conducts surgery on Zach despite her lack of training as he begins to bleed out. When Danny attacks, Cam tries to persuade Will to intervene. Cam's life is not a consideration for Monroe as he presses on with the operation and prepares to shoot Will and Danny.
As soon as Clark gets off the phone with Cam, she knows to get down. When Will and Danny learn about the snipers, Cam goes into action to protect Zach's life. Danny threatens Cam again, resulting in a confrontation between Will and Danny, who afterwards listened to music together to defuse the situation and lessen the tension.
Helicopters pursue Danny's ambulance along the Los Angeles River, and Danny engages them with gunfire. Will and Danny are notorious for operating their vehicles in the opposing lane of the highway, resulting in several collisions.
Papi's son drives an empty ambulance toward the police after packing it with C-4 explosives and deploying a machine gun, which ends up murdering Monroe. Mark is able to track down and murder Roberto. Will and Danny make their way to Papa's refuge after escaping from the police. Will refuses to comply with Papi's orders and hooks up with Danny to assassinate him and his mercenaries. In the midst of the chaos, Cam accidentally shoots Will with Zach's pistol.
When Danny arrives at the hospital in the ambulance, he is furious to learn that Cam was the one who shot Will. Will murders Danny with a single shot when he threatens to kill Cam as well. The police detain and then operate on Will, as Zach tells the authorities that Will saved his life, while Cam hides some of the proceeds from the heist from Amy.
