Lana Wachowski is the producer, co-writer, and director of the 2021 American science fiction action film The Matrix Resurrections. The film is a follow-up to 2003's The Matrix Revolutions and the fourth in the series. All of the actors that appeared in the previous films, as well as newcomers Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Jessica Henwick, Jonathan Groff, Neil Patrick Harris, and Priyanka Chopra Jonas, are back in this installment. It takes place sixty years after the revolutions and follows Neo, a video game producer who has problems distinguishing between truth and fiction in his everyday existence. Neo is freed from a new Matrix by a gang of rebels with the assistance of Morpheus, a programmed version of the character.
A sequel to The Matrix has been ruled out by the Wachowskis since the publication of Revolutions in 2012. WB kept trying to revive the property by recruiting Zak Penn to write a new screenplay after the Wachowskis rejected every offer to develop further sequels. A fourth Matrix movie was ultimately confirmed for late 2019, with Lana Wachowski returning as director sans Lilly and Reeves and Moss resuming their roles, although the release date has yet to be determined. The COVID-19 epidemic, which broke out in March of that year, forced a halt to production, which had begun in February. The cast demanded that Wachowski continue the film, despite her initial hesitation. In August, production got back on track and was completed three months later.
Warner Bros. Pictures presented The Matrix Resurrections at the Toronto International Film Festival on December 16, 2021, and the film was released in theaters and on HBO Max on December 22, 2021. It was a box office disappointment, earning $156 million worldwide against a $190 million budget, and received mixed reviews from both critics and fans, who praised the film's ambition, themes, and performances (especially from Reeves and Moss), but criticized its script, action, cinematography, and recasting of several actors, such as Laurence Fishburne and Hugo Weaving. At the 75th British Academy Film Awards, it was nominated for Best Visual Effects but lost to Dune.
Story
The Matrix video game series was created by Thomas Anderson, a prominent video game developer, based on his hazy recollections of his past life as Neo. The character of Trinity, a married mother with no memory of her past, was based on Tiffany, a woman Anderson kept running into at a neighborhood coffee shop. At times, Anderson has a hard time distinguishing between what he believes to be reality and what he believes to be a dream. In an attempt to stop the incidences from occurring, his therapist prescribed blue tablets. He then stopped taking them.
Anderson uses a modal, a programming sandbox, to build characters for video games. Bugs, a young lady, discovers that the modal is reenacting the moment when Trinity first discovered Neo in the Matrix by executing an ancient code in a loop.
([a] Before Anderson's business partner Smith can remove the modal, Bugs discovers a software embodying Morpheus and helps liberate him. To their surprise, Bugs and Morpheus locate Neo in the Matrix, despite the fact that he had been considered dead.
Machines from Bugs' spacecraft, the Mnemosyne, retrieve and carry Neo to the Mnemosyne as he awakens in a pod. Neo and Niobe are reunited on the human bastion of Io. She says there are human survivors who have teamed up with robots that have defected to join human civilization after the Machine War. Despite Neo's best efforts, Niobe refuses to let him free from Trinity, instead imprisoning him. Bugs and the rest of her team go against Niobe's orders in order to help Neo release Trinity.
Smith and other exile programs intercept them as soon as they enter the Matrix and attempt to return it to its original state. Neo defeats Smith in the next battle as his powers gradually resurface. Neo and Trinity are on their way to find each other when Neo's therapist comes and immobilizes him through the use of time manipulation. As the analyst, he exposes himself as the person he claims to be. Neo and Trinity's deaths allowed him to revive them so that he could study them.
Aside from making the Matrix more efficient and resistant to anomalies, he found that suppressing their memories while keeping them in close proximity made it so. Neo's freedom, on the other hand, caused a disruption in the system, resulting in a Matrix re-boot. To prevent the reboot from happening, the analyst convinced those in authority that Neo would return to his pod freely by threatening to murder Trinity.
Niobe's spacecraft returns the Mnemosyne to Io, forcing Neo and Bugs to leave the Matrix. A past encounter with an exile program, Sati, is rekindled when Niobe brings Neo there. [b] Since her parents were murdered by the machines, Sati is working on devising a way to liberate Trinity in order to atone for their murders. If he fails to convince Trinity to become aware of her own past and the Matrix, Neo strikes a bargain with the Analyst: he will return to his pod.
Tiffany's family emerges while Neo interacts with her, luring her to remain. For a short while, she succumbs to their demands before quickly rejecting them and rediscovering her real self as Trinity. Anxious to get revenge on Smith for his own captivity, the analyst makes one more effort to murder Neo before the others arrive and free him.
Neo and Trinity are trapped in a building after being the last to be rescued. Together, they jump, expecting Neo to be able to use his flying prowess, but it is Trinity who acquires the skill and saves the day.
Both Trinity and the Analyst return to face the Analyst now that they have regained control of the Matrix. Satireously, they praise him for the new beginning, which they aim to utilize for their own purposes in remaking the matrix.
