In a single, uninterrupted 97-minute take in real-time, Ben Conway has created a fascinating Belfast criminal drama about a heroin dealer making one final tragic sale. The Survivalist, Stephen Fingleton's 2015 directorial debut, is a joy to see.
It's all one long, locked-off picture of a man driving about in a car, chatting tensely on his hands-free mobile phone while his life rapidly disintegrates in front of his eyes. Locke, a low-budget 2014 film featuring Tom Hardy doing the same thing, is a major influence here. Rosie actor Moe Dunford plays Budge, a fierce drug dealer hoping for the customary big score to get him out of this dirty industry so he can build up an honest bodyshop repair business with a friend. The film begins with Budge driving around the city, barking instructions through his mobile phone: he plans to borrow €100,000 from a well-known psychopath called Joe (Stephen Rea), one of many people we just hear on the phone; Budge plans to use this to buy some cocaine from Ukrainian gangsters (his girlfriend is Ukrainian) who need to unload it right now and get out of the country; then he plans to sell these drugs to his contact for €100,000. The whole thing just took an hour and a half!
This, of course, turns out to be disastrous. However, there are some things that don't quite track: his putative garage business associate – stunned and horrified by what Budge is getting dragged into – serves the plot function of a spouse or romantic partner, and I wonder if it's plausible that an important drug dealer like Budge believes he can just quit and become a civilian in the same city. I'm not so sure. There's a certain panache to it.
